Mumble and his friends from the original film are back along with a few surprises in Happy Feet Too, director George Miller's follow-up to his wildly successor and bizarre musical penguin odyssey. Fans are bound to love the new characters, songs and dance moves featured here, and a more focused story helps curb much of the original's more obnoxious (however well-intentioned) preachy moments. This is a tighter and better constructed sequel, one filled with dazzling animation and infectious musical numbers unlike any other that’s bound to make everyone want to get up and shake their booty.

"Happy Feet Two is above all exuberant entertainment, a song and dance extravaganza with an infectious soundtrack. In this regard, Pink was a wise casting choice. There’s more to it than her ability to sing; there’s empathy in her voice, an emotional resonance that lets me know her character is not only a mother but also a deeply caring person. Her solo number midway through the film (also included on the first film’s soundtrack) signals the appearance of the aurora australis, which is, needless to say, a beautiful sight to behold, especially in 3D. Some have been critical of these movies, but I for one am glad that we have them. They don’t follow the rules of the traditional animated movie – no soppy love stories, no mindless comedy bits, no “playing down” to the level of the audience. They are, in a word, unique."

While the last moments of the original film delved a bit too far into preachy territory about the environment and such, I’m still a big fan of George Miller's animated experiement. Likewise, I was more than happy to see Mumble and the gang steppin' up in this awesome sequel, which refocuses things on what matters most: plenty of fun, music, and of course dancing. Watching it on Blu-ray makes the already amazing looking film even more dazzling, as you’ll be taken aback by the extraordinary details and beautiful colors on the characters and backgrounds. And to accompany the visuals is a just as dazzling 5.1 DTS-HD audio track, making the dialog, music and the rhythmic sounds of the dance steps a treat to the ears.

There’s also a few booty-shaking special features to enjoy here, the main one being the “Happy Feet Two Movie App” that lets you download an app to an iOS device and view additional content such as behind-the-scenes footage and storyboards to watch alongside the film. I thought this was a pretty neat feature to have for those who are really into learning how a film is put together. “Behind the Story” shows off four featurettes that each tell a little of the sequel’s origins and how they all came together to bring our beloved penguins back for even more fun. The “Music” section has three sing-along's for the kids and a bonus track for a new song by singer/actress Pink. Rounding out the special features is an all-new CG animated short of Sylvester and Tweety called “I Tawt I Taw A Puddy Tat”. Like the recent Road Runner CG shorts that accompanied select Warner family films, I didn’t think I would like it at first, but it sort of grew on me by the time it was over.

Those beloved dancing penguins are back in Happy Feet Two, a superior sequel that manages to be even more spectacular and infectious than the original - and far less preachy. Gorgeously animated musical numbers and a sumptuous soundtrack make this an outstanding Blu-ray, with enough special features and fun bonuses to keep the penguin party grooving all night long. With a nice blend of drama, comedy, and plenty of foot stomping, booty moving music that’ll make you want to get up and shake your tailfeather, you just can’t go wrong with these lovable dancing penguins and friends.
