Konami brings their vampire-hunting franchise to Nintendo's 3DS handheld in this mysterious 2/3D hybrid adventure.

Written by Evan Nathans (editor-at-large)

In one of the most frustrating "blink and you'll miss it" moments during Nintendo's conference, which was almost devoid of new 3DS footage, Konami's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate, the supposed new 2D spinoff to last year's series reboot, was only seen through scant footage played during a tease of new and upcoming games for the 3D handheld.

But from what we can tell so far, yes, the game won't entirely be in 2D, as its eschews the hand-drawn sprites of previous 2D games for a completely polygonal world instead. I guess this shouldn't come as a surprise, given its being developed by Mercury Steam, who helmed the Lords of Shadow reboot on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last year, and will be handling its upcoming sequel.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate could be an interesting mix of 2/3D gameplay, but we're going to need more than a few seconds of shaky footage to find out.
