Anyone for more black rubber?
I might be the only person in the entire world that preferred Zach Synder's
first film to his second. By first I'm referring to the considerably-good
remake of Dawn of the Dead, and second the extremely popular 300.
I know, I know...grab your pitchforks and string me up now, but aside from the
body-slicing, head-cracking bouts of utter awesomeness, the overall thing felt
quite shallow and left me feeling empty. So yes, I suppose I preferred
Ridley Scott's Gladiator to 300, and this despite my love for
the original graphic novel from Frank Miller. So how does the first
trailer for his upcoming The Watchman adaptation strike me?
Comic book fans (especially the online ones) are well known for their bouts
with stuttering hyperbole and vast experiments with over-exaggeration.
This is a world where everything has to be the "absolutely best ever!!" or else
its terrible. Heaven knows I'm trying to do my best here, but it might be
the sour inclusion of that Smashing Pumpkins song in the trailer (shades of
Batman and Robin, anyone?) or I just might be comic book-movied out.
I know all you out there will totally and completely disagree with me, but I'm
keeping my expectations on the more reasonable side of things and going in
without any preconceptions. It doesn't help that the trailer quotes the
original Watchmen graphic novel as the most acclaimed of all-time
(again, there's some hyperbole for you, and I'm sure Maus fans would
beg to differ).
I know I'm going to take a lot of heat for this stance, but there's no
denying the rabid fan-base and legacy this one has enjoyed. Still, quite a
beautiful trailer and get ready as The Watchmen hits theaters March 6th, 2009!
